Free Key Choir is a secular, Oakland-based DIY choir that sings all original music created by musicians, composers, and arrangers within the choir. We share music with a finger directly on the pulse of folks who are writing songs here and now.
Since fall of 2022, Free Key Choir has been cultivating an exciting and inclusive home for independent musicians, artists, and community members to gather weekly in one large, collaborative project, and through that, forge new connections and creations that expand the horizons of the music landscape in the Bay Area and beyond. The choir is home to both a large number of experienced and accomplished musicians, people who are newer to choral singing entirely, and everyone in between.
When we perform, we invite the audience into the transformative process of what it looks like to turn a song into a choral piece by showcasing the song in its original version before performing the choral arrangement. In sharing these pieces with our community, we are able to provide independent musicians a wider audience to share and celebrate their work than they may have access to on their own.
The choir was founded and is directed by Derek Sup.
Here is a list of many of the different musical projects that have been associated with the choir, either currently or in the past.
